New SEAD School Action Guide

On March 27, the Aspen Institute and partners released a new guide, titled: Integrating Social, Emotional, and Academic Development: An Action Guide for School Leadership Teams. Building on the final report from the National Commission, this publication translates the Commission’s recommendations into actions and advice for principals and their teams — empowering them and challenging them to improve the school experience for every student.

The Aspen Institute Project Play: Calls for Coaches

The Aspen Institute Sports & Society Program and National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development jointly released a series of guidelines, whitepapers and checklists to “help youth sports coaches develop personal growth in their players.”

New Report Focuses on Widespread Growth of SEL Programs

In early March, MDR released a new report, The State of the K-12 Market 2018: Social and Emotional Learning in Schools, that examines educators’ preparedness to implement SEL curriculum in school as well as the challenges they face in addressing students’ social and emotional development.

CFC Launches Highly Anticipated Out-of-School Time SEL Program

The Committee for Children (CFC) announced that it is creating a new social-emotional learning for after-school care, summer camps, and other learning environments outside of the classroom. This new program is supported by a grant from the Wallace Foundation and will be an adaptation of CFC’s renowned Second Step program.

How Social and Emotional Learning Can Improve Teacher Education

CASEL and the Committee for Children partnered to publish a two-page report that details how (and why) teacher training programs are not preparing educators to develop, model, and teach social-emotional skills and practices. The report also outlines solutions to improve SEL preparation and minimize training gaps.

Nearly $4MM Investment Will Expand Student-Centered Learning

The Coalition for Community Schools, Communities In Schools and StriveTogether announced four communities across the United States will receive a combined $3.75 million in funding to implement student-centered learning programs. Community groups include Thrive Chicago, Learn to Earn Dayton, Lehigh Valley Reads, and Communitites in Schools of Memphis.
